Xinzo de Limia in a day

A Limia is a land of passage: the Roman road from Braga to Astorga, the pilgrimage routes to Santiago and the border with Portugal all ran through here. This page gathers the trails with an entry on this website. Distances, times and waymarks are not given because the sources consulted do not record them; before walking, check the official signposting of each route.

Visiting Xinzo de Limia

  • Xinzo de Limia in a day: a proposal combining the Museo Galego do Entroido, the church of Santa Mariña, the Torre da Pena, the Bon Xesús convent, the fountains and the Lagoa de Antela.
  • Historic heritage trail of Xinzo de Limia: the old church, rural Romanesque, the Torre da Pena, Trandeiras and Mosteiro de Ribeira, following the 2009 route of xinzodelimia.eu [3].

Historic roads

  • Portuguese Vía de la Plata Way. (More in The Way of St James through A Limia.) From Verín, pilgrims can choose between two alternatives to Ourense: one via Laza and another via Xinzo de Limia and Allariz, both recognised in the Sanabrés itinerary [1]. The website xinzodelimia.eu places that branch through Verín, A Estivada, Xinzo, Sandiás, Allariz, Xunqueira de Ambía and San Cibrao das Viñas [3].
  • The Roman Via Nova (Via XVIII). Built in Flavian times, it linked Braga with Astorga, crossed the comarca and left milestones at Sandiás and other points [2]. See History of A Limia.
