María del Valle Lozano, known as María de Beiro, was born in Ourense; Galipedia gives the year 1888 and Vía Lethes 12 November 1886, in Canedo. She was murdered on 29 October 1937 in Mosteiro de Ribeira (Xinzo de Limia) [1][2].
Life
She was the mother of eight children and had lived in Havana, where the poet Manuel Gómez del Valle was born in 1906; she did charitable and religious work and was a member of the Communist Party [1][2]. After her son’s execution on 11 August 1936, she was arrested in 1937 for asking for his sentence to be commuted [1].
Death
She was held in a prison —that of Celanova, according to Galipedia; the improvised one in the town hall of Bande, according to Vía Lethes— and taken from there to be murdered on 29 October 1937 together with Salud Torres Díaz, a 25-year-old UGT delegate. The bodies were found at the Lomba de Lamas, in Mosteiro de Ribeira; her body was carried to the cemetery on a cart by the neighbours. The register records the cause as brain destruction by shooting [1][2].
Memory
In July 2019 the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory began the search for her remains. Claudio Rodríguez Fer wrote the poem «O terror en carro de vacas», and Antón Tovar dedicated the story «A grande ilusión» to her and her son [1][2]. See Manuel Gómez del Valle.
