A Limia is a flat, almost horizontal depression in the south of Ourense, crossed by the Limia river and, until the 20th century, occupied by the Lagoa de Antela. Further south, the Baixa Limia raises the Xurés and Larouco ranges and opens the Limia valley towards Portugal [1][2]. This section gathers the nature entries with sources.

Entries

Two territories in one river

The Limia rises in Sarreaus, runs through the upper basin, with a wide, flat valley, and passes Xinzo de Limia; from there the bed narrows towards Portugal, receives the waters of the Salas and of the Xurés and Larouco ranges and enters the Lindoso dam [1]. In the Baixa Limia lies the Baixa Limia – Serra do Xurés Natural Park, which borders the Peneda-Gerês National Park in Portugal [1].

Three landscapes

The plain of A Limia, with oligotrophic waters and hay meadows, where birds such as the little bustard or the short-eared owl live and the lagoon thistle has its home; the mountains, with Pyrenean oak woods, birches and hollies, in the Pena and Xurés ranges; and the Limia valley, which joins them and carries the waters to Viana do Castelo. The cross-border Gerês-Xurés area has been a Biosphere Reserve since 2009.
