Viewpoints of A Limia: lookouts over the plain and the mountains
The natural and heritage viewpoints of A Limia listed by the 25 Motivos network: towers, castles and chapels above the plain of the former Lagoa de Antela and mountain and waterfall spots in the Limia concellos.
The 25 Motivos tourist network (a project of the GDR Limia-Arnoia) lists several places in A Limia as viewpoints. Almost all share what is unique about the comarca: a wide-open plain where any small rise, tower or castle served as a lookout, and where the visual trace of the former Lagoa de Antela, drained in the 20th century, can be seen [1][2]. This page gathers those in Limia concellos, by concello, following the network’s own descriptions.
Viewpoints over the plain
- Torre da Pena (Xinzo de Limia). The tower overlooks the plain from a small elevation; 25 Motivos presents it as a viewpoint over the farmed Limia and the memory of the lagoon [1]. Its history is in the entry on The Torre da Pena.
- Monastery of Trandeiras (Xinzo de Limia). The viewpoint is around the religious complex, of medieval origin linked to the Cistercians, although the present building mostly reflects the renovations of the 16th to 18th centuries. It lies at the eastern entrance of the plain and near the passage of the Vía de la Plata [2]. See the Bon Xesús convent of A Limia.
- Monte Talariño (Sarreaus). A modest hill in the centre of the comarca, a natural lookout over the plain; on clear days the view reaches the Xurés mountains and the San Mamede range [3].
- Canderrei castle and chapel of the Virxe dos Remedios (Trasmiras). A small rise above the plain with the ruins of the castle, of which only visible remains survive, and a chapel beside it; the network stresses its strategic value for visual control of the territory [6].
- Celme castle, in Congostro (Rairiz de Veiga). A raised position in the parish of Congostro, where only remains of the medieval fortress survive [7]. See Torre de Celme.
Viewpoints of mountains, water and valleys
- Castelaus trail (Vilar de Santos, according to the source). A natural viewpoint over a small river valley, along a trail walked on foot, with woods, walls and footbridges [4].
- Bóveda (Vilar de Barrio). A rise near the parish of Bóveda, with views over the farmed valleys, the rural settlements and the mountains that close the horizon [5].
- Fírbeda or da Forxa waterfall (Porqueira). The Fírbeda river drops along a steep stretch with small cascades, pools and a canyon; the viewpoint is part of a circular route around the waterfall [8]. See heritage of Porqueira.
- Penedos da Raíña Loba (Os Blancos). Granite crags around the Gomariz range, linked to the legend of the Raíña Loba [9]. See the legend in The Raíña Loba.
- Outeiro (Calvos de Randín). A high point near the hamlet of Rubiás, in the former Couto Mixto area, on the border with Portugal [10].
- Larouco range, "Baltar Namora" (Baltar). A panoramic bench in the mountains, on the southern edge of the comarca, with views to the south and Portugal [11].
