Benito Feijoo Seguín was born in Sandiás on 17 July 1894 and died in Séméac (France) in 1968. He was a Galician trade unionist and politician [1].

Career

A stonemason by trade, he was a member of the Sociedad de Oficios Varios de Cervás, of the UGT and of the Ares Socialist Group. Arrested in 1934, the revolutionary general strike took him to prison again and a court martial sentenced him on 13 January 1935 to 26 years’ major confinement; his case was dismissed in May that year. After the Popular Front’s triumph in February 1936 he was appointed mayor of Ares [1].

Exile

After the coup of 18 July 1936 he hid and stayed a fugitive throughout the war; in 1937 he was tried in absentia for military rebellion. On 21 July 1939 he managed to embark at Ares with 26 other Republicans in the escape aboard the trawler Ramón and reached France, where he was interned in the Le Barcarès camp. He remained tied to the UGT in Amberieu en Bugey and represented the PSOE in exile at several congresses (1946 and 1950); later he moved to Tarbes [1].
