Convento do Bon Xesús da Limia (Trandeiras): the BIC file
The Convento do Bon Xesús da Limia, in Trandeiras (Xinzo de Limia), was built in the early 16th century; the Xunta has opened the procedure to declare it a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of monument.
The Convento do Bon Xesús da Limia, in Trandeiras, in the municipality of Xinzo de Limia, is one of the most significant historic buildings in the region. In February 2025 the Diario Oficial de Galicia published the initiation file to declare it a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), in the category of monument [1].
A 16th-century convent
It was built in the early 16th century with the cleric Alonso de Piña as promoter and the master Bartolomé Nosendo in charge of the works. It was run by the Franciscan order and kept its function until the 19th century, when it was abandoned and passed into private hands. Despite deterioration and looting, the church has reached the present in good condition [1].
The documentation in the file considers it a work of transition between late Gothic and the early Galician Renaissance, a period little represented in Galicia [1].
What is protected
The declaration values its unique nature, in which architectural, artistic and historical values come together. It highlights the quality of the masonry of the church and of the hydraulic infrastructure that supplied the estate, the five wooden altarpieces and the intangible heritage, such as the legends explaining the convent’s foundation [1].
The delimitation includes the parts that are or were built on: the church, the monastic quarters with the cloister and the adjoining buildings. To the south, the walled kitchen garden; at the rear, the oven, the beehive enclosure and the hydraulic infrastructure: the arched fountain, the stone channels, the spout fountain, the basins, the cisterns and the two springs that served the convent [1].
Protection regime
Publication in the DOG means the provisional application of the protection regime of Law 5/2016 on Galician Cultural Heritage, with immediate protection, until final approval within a maximum of two years. According to the Xunta, 110 assets have been declared since 2016 and Galicia has 783 BIC [1].
According to the 2008 regional website
The website xinzodelimia.eu preserves another description. Of the original church only the façade survived, because a fire in 1668 destroyed the rest and it had to be remodelled; the portal is Gothic-Plateresque, with influences of Egas and the Manueline, with semicircular arches and a lowered ogee arch, a peto with the Child Jesus and a rose window. The interior has a broad nave with ribbed vaulting and polychrome Baroque altarpieces. Work began in 1523 and ended in 1669; it sheltered monks, bishops and priests fleeing the French Revolution, hosted by Cardinal Quevedo. After the exclaustration of 1835 it passed into private hands, except the church, which is a parish church, and the Concello de Xinzo bought and refurbished it. The cloister keeps only its lower storey, a mixture of Renaissance and Flamboyant Gothic, with ogee arches on columns with historiated and plant capitals; in front of the church there is a cruceiro, and in the square of Trandeiras a peto de ánimas more than 200 years old [2].
