War and exile
During the Civil War he was a soldier of the Galician Militias, in the 4th Battalion of the 1st Mixed Brigade. The Galician Popular Militias were a Republican battalion of volunteers from Galicia, created in 1936 by Santiago Álvarez and Castelao; made up of 1,200 militiamen, including 150 women, it defended Madrid and ended up merged into the Fifth Regiment. At the end of the war he fled to France, passed through the refugee camps and the 31st Foreign Workers’ Company, and was posted to Suippes, on the Maginot Line [1].
Mauthausen and Gusen
He entered Mauthausen on 27 January 1941, arriving from Stalag XI-B at Fallingbostel, with the number 5697. On 8 April he was transferred to Gusen, where he died in November. In the record of his death he appears as a hairdresser, single and «without religion», which was unusual; his death is recorded at the Spanish consulate in Frankfurt am Main [1]. He appears in the databases of the Banc de la Memòria, PARES, Nomes e Voces and the Arolsen Archives [1].
