Jerónimo de San Félix, the Trinitarian from Baltar Who Became Bishop of Albarracín
Jerónimo Fernández de Castro Delgado, «Jerónimo de San Félix» (Baltar, 1758 – Albarracín, 1828), was minister general of the Discalced Trinitarians and Bishop of Albarracín, and declined the bishopric of Málaga.
Jerónimo Fernández de Castro Delgado, known as Jerónimo de San Félix, was born in Baltar in 1758 and died in Albarracín (Teruel) on 5 October 1828. He was a Discalced Trinitarian, minister general of the order, bishop and benefactor [1].
Life
He took the habit in Alfaro (La Rioja) in 1773, studied Philosophy in Pamplona and Theology in Salamanca, and then taught Philosophy in Miranda (Portugal) and Zaragoza and Theology in Salamanca (three years as assistant and six as lector). He was minister (superior) of the college of Salamanca and of the convent of Correxais, in Valdeorras, definitor general (1814-1818) and minister general of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity (1818-1824) [1].
It was thanks to his «tireless zeal» that the Trinitarian reformer St John Baptist of the Conception was beatified by Pius VII in 1819. During the Liberal Triennium (1820-1823) he did all he could to prevent the regular clergy from being subjected to the bishops, but without result, and he suffered over the plight of his brother Pablo Fernández de Castro, a canon of Santiago, unjustly imprisoned in Madrid, whom he visited daily [1].
Bishop of Albarracín
Appointed bishop of Albarracín at the beginning of 1824, he took possession on 2 May. He worked for his parishioners through private conversations and circular letters to his priests, and spent his income on caring for the poor, orphans, widows and the sick. He was elected bishop of Málaga but declined. After a long and painful illness of eight months, he died in Albarracín aged seventy and fifty-five years in the habit [1].
