The Cultural Association O Bión and the Xornadas de Cultura Popular of Xinzo
The Cultural Association O Bión, founded in Xinzo de Limia in 1989, and its Xornadas de Cultura Popular: the second in 2019 with the Pantalla, the words of San Xoán and Cerrato's book, and the third in 2020 by radio and social media.
The Cultural Association O Bión was founded in Xinzo de Limia in 1989, according to Xosé "Pepe" Calleja López, one of its members, on the blog As tradicións da Limia [1]. Its popular-culture magazine, O Bouzo, published ethnographic work such as that of Edelmiro Martínez Cerredelo on irrigation water rights in Galicia, cited in the bibliography of other Limia studies [2]. Since 2018 the organisation has run the Xornadas de Cultura Popular as part of the San Xoán festivities.
2nd Xornadas de Cultura Popular (22 June 2019)
They were held on a San Xoán Saturday at the headquarters of the A Pantalla Association, with the collaboration of MUGAE [3]. The programme:
- Talk on the returned words of San Xoán, by Xosé Calleja, who studied the charm that defeats the devil and its Limia version (see other legends and beliefs).
- "Cen anos do noso Entroido 1919-2019", by Suso Fariñas, who summarised his studies of the Xinzo Entroido drawing on writings by Nieto Oliva and Vicente Risco and on testimony from elders: he said when the word Pantalla first appears in writing and gave the names of the troupes of the early 20th century.
- Presentation of Dezaoito relatos de vida e morte (Asociación Galega para a Cultura e a Ecoloxía), by the teacher Ángel Cerrato, with a talk by Estanislao Fernández de la Cigoña, president of the AGCE.
- Exhibition by the Limia painter Omayra R.A. with her vision of the Pantalla [3].
The first edition was in 2018, when Calleja presented on 23 June a paper on the tulla (grain bin) as a building element of A Limia (see tullas, arcas and palleiras of Xinzo) [4].
3rd Xornadas (26 June 2020)
Because of the pandemic, the third edition was held through social media, with the collaboration of the radio station Limiactiva, the Xpazo space (which lent its meeting room to record the programme) and the CEIP Rosalía de Castro, which lent the frog board to play a few rounds of the traditional game. Raúl Mera and Justo Gude took part in the recording, and Justo Gude prepared the script [1].
