Xinzo de Limia in a day: a route through heritage, water and the lagoon

A suggested one-day visit to Xinzo de Limia: Museo Galego do Entroido, the church and square of the town, Torre da Pena, the Bon Xesús convent, the parish springs and the Lagoa de Antela, with a link to each page.

This is a suggested route for getting to know Xinzo de Limia in a day, built from the pages of this site. It is not an official itinerary and gives no opening times, distances or visit durations: the sources consulted do not provide them, so check with the Concello for museum and church opening hours before setting out. It runs from the most urban to the most rural, and each stop points to the page where the data and sources are.

1. The town: museum and square

Start at the Museo Galego do Entroido, in the former Praza de Abastos (market hall), to understand Xinzo’s Entroido before seeing the pantallas in the street; the full cycle is in Anatomía da pantalla and O ciclo do Entroido de Xinzo. From there, the history of the town’s spaces is in Praza Maior, Ladeira e Toural.

2. The church of Santa Mariña

Of the original 12th-century Romanesque church only the façade, part of the plan and a stretch of the north wall survive; the portal has three archivolts with historiated capitals [1]. The church is one of the nine medieval churches in the municipality with information panels, installed in 2018 [2]. More in Roteiro do patrimonio histórico de Xinzo de Limia and Festas de Santa Mariña.

3. The Torre da Pena

On the edge of the Lagoa de Antela, on the road to Maceda, stands the Torre da Pena, a 14th-century military tower declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1994 [1].

4. The Bon Xesús convent, in Trandeiras

To the north, in Trandeiras, the Convento do Bon Xesús da Limia is a 16th-century Franciscan building [1].

5. Springs and wash-houses of the parishes

If there is time, the rural parishes keep springs, water sources and wash-houses, from the Fonte da Ra in the town to the Guntimil waterfall; they are listed in Fontes, lavadoiros e mananciais de Xinzo de Limia [3].

6. The river and the Lagoa de Antela

It ends with the water that explains the region: the River Limia, which runs through the town, and the Lagoa de Antela, today ponds and bird country (Charcas e aves da Lagoa de Antela).
