Springs, washhouses and wells of Xinzo de Limia
Inventory of the springs, wells, washhouses and waterfall of the concello of Xinzo de Limia, by parish, according to the collaborative inventory Galicia Nomeada and the Xunta's heritage catalogue.
In the concello of Xinzo de Limia, running water does not come only from the river: for centuries local people depended on the springs, wells and washhouses of each place. This page gathers those recorded in two public sources: the collaborative micro-toponymy inventory Galicia Nomeada [1] and the Xunta’s cultural heritage catalogue (PXOM of Xinzo de Limia) [2]. There are 30 points spread across eleven of the concello’s twenty parishes. No uses or stories that the sources do not record are explained here: only names, parish and location, which can be seen on the comarca map.
By parish
A Pena
Galicia Nomeada lists four springs: the Fonte da Porteliña, the Fonte das Lagas, the Fonte da Lamarella and the Fonte da Nexiña [1]. It is the parish with the most catalogued springs in the concello. Parish entry: A Pena.
Boado
The Fonte do Monte (Galicia Nomeada) [1] and a catalogued fountain in the village of Boado itself [2]. Entry: Boado.
Damil
A catalogued washhouse in the village of Damil [2]. Entry: Damil.
Faramontaos
The Fonte Pía [1]. Entry: Faramontaos.
Guntimil
The Tornadoiro spring, the waterfall called A Fervenza (the only one in the concello with that name in the inventory) [1] and a catalogued fountain in the village of Guntimil [2]. Entry: Guntimil.
Laroá
Two springs called A Mina and a fountain, the Fonte do Canto [1]. Entry: Laroá.
Morgade
The Fonte da Labarqueira [1]. Entry: Morgade.
Novás
With A Pena, it is the parish with the most water points: three fountains called A Fonte and the Fonte de Abelaira in Galicia Nomeada [1], and two washhouses catalogued in the village of Novás [2]. Two of the three fountains and the two washhouses are less than a hundred metres from each other, which suggests they formed a single water complex of the village (an inference from the coordinates, not data from the sources). Entry: Novás.
Piñeira Seca
The Poza Redonda, classified as a washhouse, and A Fonte Galega [1]. Entry: Piñeira Seca.
San Pedro de Laroá
The Fonte do Conde and O Fontao [1], and a washhouse catalogued in the village of San Pedro [2]. Entry: San Pedro de Laroá.
Solbeira de Limia
A washhouse catalogued in the village of Pidre [2]. Entry: Solbeira de Limia.
Xinzo de Limia (town)
The Fonte da Ra appears in Galicia Nomeada [1]; on the collaborative map there are also three unnamed fountains in the town area [3]. Entry: Xinzo de Limia (parish).
What the names mean
The names distinguish types of point: fonte is a fitted-out water outlet; manancial, the spring itself, sometimes without any structure; lavadoiro, the tank or basin where clothes were washed. The inventory classifies the Poza Redonda as a washhouse, although the name speaks of a pool.
