Writers, Artists and Scholars of A Limia: The xinzodelimia.eu Archive

The regional website xinzodelimia.eu, linked to the Civitas Limicorum association, carried between 2006 and 2010 a set of «authors of A Limia» entries that today can be read only in Wayback captures. This page gathers those entries and gives them a small frame: each item summarises what the entry says and cites its origin ^[1]. The data are those of the 2006-2010 website, so living people appear with the information of that time.

Women and men writers

• Alfonso S. Palomares (Alfonso Sobrado Palomares), born in Calvos de Randín, a graduate in Law and Journalism, ran the EFE agency from 1986 to 1997, a period in which the agency received the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities. He then moved to the Zeta group and was director of the Casa de Galicia in Madrid. He published the novels Esgotando a esperanza (II Café Xixón Short Novel Prize), As linotipias do medo and Unha longa sede, essays on Camus, Africa and Marxism, and the biography Felipe González, o home e o político ^[1].
• Antón Riveiro Coello, born in Xinzo de Limia in 1964, studied law in Santiago and was a civil servant before turning to writing. He has won, among others, the Álvaro Cunqueiro, García Barros, Café Dublín, Modesto R. Figueiredo, Manuel Murguía, Camilo José Cela, Castelao de Narrativa and Ourense de Contos prizes. Works: Homónima, Materia prima, Narradio, O arcebispo de Antioquía, Paisaxes con palabras, Parque Central e outros relatos ^[1].
• Rafael Laso Lorenzo, born in Xinzo de Limia on 25 January 1965, raised among his grandparents’ stories of witches, Moors and treasures, has lived in Vigo since the age of eleven. He is an industrial technical engineer and the author of O trasmundo de Antioquía (Cumio, 2009) ^[1].
• Pedro José Vizoso, born in Xinzo de Limia on 30 October 1959, emigrated to Switzerland (1977) and Venezuela (1978), where he stayed almost ten years, and works as a Spanish instructor in New Mexico. He published O real e a súa sombra (1993), A fiestra (1994), Caderno de bosque (1995), Ases: antoloxía súbita (1995), A dobre vida (2004) and a bilingual edition of Gérard de Nerval (1999) ^[1].
• Xosé Manuel Enríquez (A Porqueira, 1957), philologist, edited works by Fermín Bouza-Brey and Neira Vilas and studied Carlos Casares’s Ilustrísima and Neira Vilas’s Contos de tres mundos ^[1].
• Carlos Gómez Salgado (Xinzo de Limia, 1960), co-author of the play Limia, a historia do Lethes (2001), author of Versos de amor e vida (poetry prize, 1979) and of the story «As campás de Antioquía» (2003), promoter of the edition of A crónica de Idacio da Limia, bispo de Chaves (2004) and correspondent of the Faro de Vigo (1988-1991) ^[1].
• Carlos Gómez García de Vedmar (Xinzo de Limia, 1917–1992), known as «Carlos de Vedmar», writer, columnist and correspondent for newspapers (Faro de Vigo, Pueblo Gallego, La Región, EFE) and radio stations (Radio Limia, 1958), with contributions to Carlist publications ^[1].
• Carmen Novoa Diz (Xinzo de Limia, 1951–2002), poet. The entry reproduces her poem «Debuxo dun soño» ^[1].
• Javier Álvarez Vizoso (Xinzo de Limia, 1967), journalist and writer, head of press and communications of the Galician Symphony Orchestra since 1993; editor at Diario 16 de Galicia since 1989 and cultural critic for ABC and La Voz de Galicia ^[1].
• Javier Méndez Salgado (Castelaus, Calvos de Randín, 1982), emigrant to Geneva, poet of Mi palabra al viento (2007), Un te amo en poesía and Galicia en el alma; as a child he won the best Carnival mask in Xinzo, now in the Museo Galego do Entroido ^[1].
• Manuel Mandianes Castro (Loureses, Os Blancos, 1942), doctor in Ethnography, Sociology and Theology, researcher at the CSIC; author of Loureses, antropoloxía dunha parroquia galega (1984), Las serpientes contra Santiago, O burro and co-author of Antela, a memoria asolagada (Xerais, 1997) ^[1].
• Francisco Rodríguez Enríquez, born in A Limia in the early 20th century, teacher and specialist in ancient languages and literatures, translated Aeschylus’s tragedies directly from the Greek (Buenos Aires, 1967) ^[1].
• Elixio Rivas Quintas (Xunqueira de Ambía, 1925), ethnolinguist; see his entry.
• Isaac Alonso Estraviz (Vilaseca, Trasmiras, 1935), doctor in Galician Philology with the thesis O falar dos concellos de Trasmiras e Qualedro, professor at the University of Vigo ^[1].

• María del Carmen Agulló Díaz (Xinzo de Limia, 1957), professor of History of Education at the Universitat de València, author of Una escuela rural republicana (2004) and of work on the purge of Valencian teachers ^[1].
• José Ramón Hernández Figueiredo, priest and ecclesiastical historian, author of Santo Tomé de Moreiras, achegamento a unha parroquia da Limia (Moreiras was a municipality for over a century and holds the pilgrimage of the Virxe das Dores, created in 1786) ^[1].

• Marcelo Macías García (Astorga 1843 – Ourense 1941), priest, historian and epigrapher, president of the Ourense Monuments Commission; he edited the Cronicón de Idacio (1906) and wrote Civitas Limicorum on the true location of the Forum Limicorum (1904) ^[1].
• Antonio Rodríguez Colmenero (entry), doctor in History and archaeologist, author of studies on the Roman road network and the epigraphic sources of southern Gallaecia ^[1].
• Elixio Rivas Quintas (Xunqueira de Ambía, 1925), philologist and ethnographer, Otero Pedraio prize in 1980 for the book A Limia; first honouree of the Museo da Limia’s «Pedra Alta» prize ^[1].
• Pedro González de Ulloa, abbot of Perrelos, Chamusiños (Trasmiras) and Covelas, is the leading exponent of the Enlightenment in 18th-century A Limia, in correspondence with Flórez, Sarmiento, Cornide, Campomanes and Montiano ^[1]. The A Limia historical studies group bears his name, and Edelmiro Martínez Cerredelo published Historia de Xinzo de Limia (2012) under that imprint.
• Xaquín Lorenzo «Xocas» (Ourense 1907–1989), ethnographer and historian of the Grupo Nós, and Xesús Taboada Chivite (Verín 1907–1976), archaeologist and ethnographer: the website includes their entries among the scholars of the area ^[1].
• Benito Fernández Alonso (Entrimo 1848 – 1922), historian, chronicler of Ourense and founder of the Royal Galician Academy, a prominent member of the Monuments Commission and promoter of the Commission’s Bulletin (from 1898), key to knowing the provincial heritage, including that of A Limia ^[1].

• Nelson Zumel, born in Xinzo de Limia in 1920, painter, collector and art dealer who dealt with Picasso, Dalí and Miró. He has the Nelson Zumel Museum in Lugo and the one in Baltar, the most important private collection of 19th- and 20th-century Spanish painting, the painting prize that bears his name, the Medal of Galicia and the title «Man of the Year 2000» ^[1].
• Francisco Asorey González (Cambados 1889 – 1961), sculptor of the Nós generation, whose family lived in Xinzo; the Gelpi Asorey family ran a shop on the Praza Maior ^[1].
• Xosé Lois Otero Becerra (Nocelo da Pena, Xinzo, 1964), painter and sculptor, Eixo Atlántico prize (2006-2007) ^[1].
• Manuel Garrido Pérez «Lolo», a Fine Arts graduate (1998), art teacher and decorator of the masks of the peliqueiros and cigarróns of the area’s Antroido ^[1].
• Manuel Díaz Ebra (Nocelo, Porqueira, 1960), painter of landscape, marine themes and still lifes ^[1].
• Benito Rodríguez Bouzas (Xinzo de Limia), self-taught oil painter, with work in the Ourense Provincial Council ^[1].

• Francisco Sanpedro Nieto (Vilar de Barrio, 1941 – 2004), Vincentian priest in Chile, doctor in Philosophy and expert in ecumenism ^[1].
• José Rodríguez Carballo (Lodoselo, 1953), Franciscan, minister general of the Order of Friars Minor since 2003 ^[1].
• Manuel Dobaño Peláez, born in Xinzo de Limia, founded a local radio station, was EFE correspondent in Catalonia and also a prominent member of the UNESCO association of Prat de Llobregat (Memoria dun compromiso, 2002) ^[1].
• José Álvarez Limia was La Región‘s correspondent in Xinzo from 1960 ^[1].
• Gonzalo Iglesias Sueiro, author of Reflexións dende a Limia, was mayor of Xinzo between 1999 and 2001, head of the CEIP Rosalía de Castro and president of the Breogán association ^[1].

• Emilia Pardo Bazán, in Apuntes de un viaje. De España a Ginebra (1873), narrates the stagecoach journey from Ourense through Allariz and Xinzo de Limia and in La dama joven (1885) the «beautiful and robust mountain girl of A Limia» ^[1].
• Armando Palacio Valdés, in Cómo se casó Brañanova, speaks of an estate in Xinzo, where his wife learned Galician and sang songs of the land ^[1].
• Leopoldo Alas «Clarín» jokes about a «Pinzón de Ginzo de Limia» (quote) in a palique; Tirso de Molina sets a scene of La gallega Mari-Hernández in the valley of A Limia, near Monterrei («Limia es el valle donde armado llegas») ^[1].
