Elixio Rivas Quintas was born in 1925 in Fondodevila, in the municipality of Xunqueira de Ambía, on the shore of the Lagoa de Antela. The Museo da Limia described him as «one of the greatest sages of our land»: a Vincentian brother, he combined teaching throughout his life (in secondary and higher education) with an enormous body of research in lexicology, onomastics, toponymy, philology and ethnography [1][2].
His work
According to the speech by Delfín Caseiro, president of the Board of the Museo da Limia, his capacity for work is evident in 60 publications, many of them self-published, and in hundreds of contributions. The most notable [3]:
- A Limia: Val da Antela e Val do Medo (1985), almost 800 pages with abundant illustrative material, summing up what is known about the territory.
- Léxico rural do noroeste hispánico, an ethnolinguistic work in 25 volumes and nearly 10,000 pages (another Museum text speaks of 24 volumes).
- The trilogy Frampas (1978), with more than 15,000 unpublished words or senses.
- Lingua galega: historia e fenomenoloxía (1989) and Lingua galega: nivéis primitivos (1994), and the Dicionario etimolóxico da lingua galega (2015), the first dictionary of its kind.
- A multidisciplinary museum, built almost single-handed, at the sanctuary of Os Milagres do Medo, with thousands of objects and farm tools bearing their names and origins.
He took part in bodies such as the Association of Friends of the Camino de Santiago, the Galician Onomastics Association, the Galician Toponymy Commission and the Royal Academy of History, and received the Otero Pedrayo Prize and the Castelao Medal [3]. The academician Xesús Ferro Ruibal defined him as an ethnolinguist who, «like a notary, bears perpetual witness» to what rural Galicia was like.
Pedra Alta Prize 2017 and Gold Medal
The Board of the Museo da Limia, which renewed its governing bodies on 30 September 2017 and created the Pedra Alta Prize, chose Rivas Quintas as its first laureate. The presentation was held on 25 November 2017 in the multipurpose hall of Vilar de Santos council, with a laudatio by José Antonio Quintas, the figure carved by the sculptor Xosé Lois Carreira as a keepsake and a diploma designed by Manuel Seoane and Lola Peláez [4]. See the page on the Pedra Alta Prize.
In April 2018 the Ourense Provincial Council awarded him the Gold Medal of the Province, and the Museum celebrated the honour; on 29 September 2018 the Museum’s Advisory Council formally joined the honours file [1][2].
