Fray Pedro Pascual García was a lay Mercedarian friar and sculptor active in the diocese of Ourense in the second half of the 18th century. According to the Diccionario Biográfico of the Real Academia de la Historia, the quality of his work is surprising and he has received little recognition in art historiography; his place of birth and his baptismal name are unknown, because Pedro Pascual is the name he took on profession. He died in Sabucedo de Limia (Porqueira) on 2 August 1756 [1].
Life and style
He appears as a lay friar in the Verín convent in the visitations of 1741 and 1754, and in his last period lived in that convent, where he must have formed a small workshop with other friars, among them a Brother Rosendo. He is an intensely Baroque sculptor: in altarpieces he uses the Solomonic column and the estípite, with daring designs, figures of strong anatomy, luminous faces, showy foreshortening and voluminous drapery, in carving of great quality, close to Rococo taste [1].
Work in the surrounding area
He made the high altarpiece of the Verín convent church, dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, and images for Gondulfes (1744), Flariz, Abades (San Paio, 1748) and Castro Laza (high altarpiece, 1750-1755). The RAH attributes to him on stylistic grounds the altarpiece of Vilamaior da Xironda and, with certainty, that of Santa María de Leirado. At Sabucedo de Limia in 1753 he contracted the high altarpiece dedicated to the Transfiguration, almost finished when he died in the parish itself, where he was buried [1].
In A Limia
The altarpiece and the sculptor’s tomb are part of Sabucedo’s heritage; see Sabucedo and José Seguín, another Baroque sculptor of the area.
