Francisco Sierra Rodríguez was born in Xinzo de Limia on 13 March 1883 and was a schoolteacher and politician. He studied teacher training in Ourense, finishing in 1906, and taught in Parada de Outeiro (Vilar de Santos), in Figueiroá (Paderne de Allariz) and, during the Republic, in Mosteiro de Ribeira [1].
Life
He was vice-president of the Lamas Communist Radio [1][2]. He had a wife, Beatriz Murias, and a daughter, Esther, who was eleven in 1936 [2].
Arrest and death
After the coup of 18 July 1936, Falangists and the Civil Guard came for him at night at his home in Mosteiro. He resisted them with mattresses and furniture against the doors and windows, and there was an exchange of gunfire; when they were about to set the house on fire, he gave himself up to save his family. They took him to the jail in Xinzo and he was murdered: Galipedia says on 2 August, and Cerredelo that the body was found on the 3rd on the hillside near Allariz, with the cause recorded as «wound from a firearm in war action». A witness says his wife gathered three thousand pesetas on the promise that he would be released, and they had already taken him out [1][2].
