Edelmiro Martínez Cerredelo, the Historian Who Recovered the Memory of A Limia
Edelmiro «Miro» Martínez Cerredelo (Xinzo de Limia, 1946), a banker by profession and historian by vocation, wrote most of the books on the recent history of Xinzo and A Limia and was named favourite son in 2022.
Edelmiro Martínez Cerredelo, «Miro» to his neighbours, was born in Xinzo de Limia on 24 February 1946. He is a historian and writer, and his work has focused above all on recovering the recent memory of A Limia [1]. Much of the information found on this site’s local-history pages comes from his books and his blog Historia de Xinzo [2].
Career
He completed his lower secondary schooling in Ourense and began working in the service sector: at his father’s petrol station, in a restaurant and in other businesses. At 25 he entered banking (Banco Hispano Americano), where he remained for his whole working life, in several places in the province of Ourense: A Pobra de Trives, Allariz, O Carballiño and Ourense. He was also a councillor in Xinzo de Limia in the last years of the Franco regime [1]. Retired in 1999, he took university studies for mature students at the University of Vigo [1].
Work
He published in ethnography journals such as Raigame and Lethes and in cultural associations of the Limian diaspora in Catalonia. He was one of the promoters of the Festa do Esquecemento, the historical re-enactment of the Roman invasion [1]. His books are:
- A prensa en Xinzo de Limia. Século XX (1911-1925), Centro de Desenvolvemento Rural «O Viso», 2006.
- Historia e memoria. A Limia: 1931-1953, Centro de Desenvolvemento Rural «O Viso», 2008.

- Xinzo de Limia na memoria, same group, 2016. According to the presentation at Xinzo’s Culture House (20 May 2016), it brings together some thirty articles on the town from the 18th century: the relationship of the Counts of Gimondi with A Limia, portrait painters, the building of the new church, the arrival of electricity in Xinzo in 1911, the history of «Radio Ginzo-La Voz de la Limia» (quote), memories of Carnival from the early 20th century and the history of football in Xinzo since 1919 [4].

The blog Historia de Xinzo
His blog Historia de Xinzo (historiadexinzo.wordpress.com), active since 2014, gathers very varied articles: biographies of Limian figures, buildings with a history, Carnival, the fairs, the local press, the Lagoa de Antela and everyday life in the 20th century. Many entries in People of A Limia start from that material, always citing the original article [2].
Recognition
In 2022 he was named favourite son of Xinzo de Limia [1]. In 2024 the Museo da Limia awarded him the «Pedra Alta» prize.
