Dolores Villarino, the woman from Xinzo who presided over the Galician Parliament
María Dolores Villarino Santiago (Xinzo de Limia, 1945) was a councillor in Vigo, an MP and, from 2005, the first woman president of the Galician Parliament.
María Dolores Villarino Santiago was born in Xinzo de Limia on 9 February 1945. She studied Economics at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, where she began her activism in the Communist Party of Galicia; later, in the PSdeG-PSOE, she was a Vigo councillor (1991-2002), first deputy mayor (1991-1995) and, from 1997, a member of the Galician Parliament [1]. On 18 July 2005 she became the first woman president of the chamber, a post she held until the end of the legislature [1].
A dedication
Her youth in Xinzo crossed paths with that of the writer Carlos Casares: according to Wikipedia, Casares was in a relationship with Dolores Villarino when he finished his degree and returned to Xinzo, and he dedicated the novel Cambio en tres (1969) to her [2].
