Ángel Cocho Ferrero (A Coruña, 1914) was headmaster of the Colexio Santa Mariña in Xinzo de Limia for more than thirty years, and is one of the most fondly remembered figures in the town’s educational and cultural life.
Biography
He was born in A Coruña in 1914, the son of an archivist and librarian, and spent his childhood and adolescence there. He studied at the Instituto Eusebio da Guarda, where his own father taught Latin [1]. Before arriving in A Limia he was already running a school in Malagón (Ciudad Real) [1].
In 1953 he came to Xinzo de Limia to run the Colexio Santa Mariña. According to the municipal honours file, the school was the town’s main educational and cultural landmark between the 1950s and 1970s, and hundreds of pupils passed through its classrooms who later went on to the bachillerato [1]. He is the father of the Limian writer and journalist Federico Cocho de Juan [1].
Recognition by the council
In June 2013 Xinzo’s Culture Department, headed by Carlos Gómez, completed the honours file to name Ángel Cocho Ferrero adopted son of Xinzo de Limia and to have the Municipal Auditorium of the Culture House, after its refurbishment and the enlargement of its seating and stage, carry his name. The June plenary session was due to consider and, in all likelihood, approve the file [1]. According to the text of the file, the aim was to honour the man who «led the educational and cultural life of the Limian town for more than 30 years» and a whole generation of men and women who were formed, personally and culturally, at the school [1].
