The festivals of A Limia operate on three scales: a few major celebrations known beyond the comarca, the patron-saint festivals of each parish, and the monthly fairs, which for centuries were the commercial engine of the town of Xinzo. This page is the index of the section; the dates, arranged by month, are in Festivals of A Limia month by month.
The major festivals
- Entroido of Xinzo de Limia. A five-week cycle before Lent, with the Pantallas as its central figure; it was declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest by the Resolution of 14 January 2019 [2]. See the Entroido section.
- Festa do Esquecemento. A historical re-enactment in Xinzo, organised since 2001 by the Cultural Association Civitas Limicorum, on the second-to-last weekend of August [1][3]. See Festa do Esquecemento.
- Romaría da Saínza. A pilgrimage festival in Rairiz de Veiga with Moors and Christians, the Cen Doncelas and Nosa Señora da Mercé. See Romaría da Saínza.
- Festivities of Santa Mariña. Patron saint of Xinzo, around 18 July [1]. See Festivities of Santa Mariña.
Parish patron-saint festivals
Xinzo de Limia town council lists these fixed dates [1]: San Sebastián (20 January, in the town), San Brais (3 February, Laroá), Santa Cruz (around 3 May, Lamas), Festa das Flores (first weekend of June, Trandeiras), San Xoán (24 June, Guntimil and the Polígono), San Pedro (29 June, in A Pena, Laroá and Boado), San Bartolomeu (23 August, Ganade), Os Remedios (9 September, Novás) and Nosa Señora das Dores (15 September, Moreiras). Each festival appears in the entry of its parish: Xinzo de Limia.
The fairs
The fair held on the 14th of each month, documented since 1131 and joined by the one on the 27th in 1922, shaped the town; see The fairs of Xinzo through time. The adjoining fair at Ponte Liñares is the Feira Nova.
